Bringin’ Sexy Back: Boudoir Photos with Kate McElwee

Warning: Do not read this post if you are uncomfortable with talk of women’s underwear and “bathing-suit area” photos of the author.

Before blogging for Wedding Bee, I had no idea what “boudoir photos” were. The first time I heard them described, I thought the idea was really, really strange. I mean, why would your husband need sexy pictures of you if he’s just going to see you naked anyway?

I started googling to find out more about the tradition, and right there on the first page – BAM! – was a link to a Seattle boudoir photographer’s website, complete with boudoir session info. Her name was Kate McElwee, her work was GORGEOUS, and I was terribly impressed. After reading more about boudoir pics I was less skeptical and more intrigued.

As an amateur photographer, I often find myself behind the camera, which means I have barely any pictures of myself, much less sexy pictures – I’m most commonly photographed sweaty and rugged during a hike, bike ride, or race. Boudoir photos started to seem more appealing. And, when I thought about what to get Justin as a wedding gift, my mind started to come back to a particular image… a little, black, unassuming photo album filled with saucy pictures.

So, that’s what I made!

Ah, Zihuatanejo…

We interrupt your regularly scheduled Montana Recap to bring you this breaking news…

Last night, we booked our honeymoon!

This is so exciting for me, because we weren’t originally sure if we were going to have one. I didn’t know if I could take the time off because we’re already away for a week before the wedding, and we weren’t sure if we could scrape together the finances.

Well, despite Justin’s reputation for being extremely fiscally prudent, he definitely has deep pockets when it comes to some things. So, he reached into his stock dividends account and pulled out a wad of $$ for a lovely, lavish honeymoon as his gift to us.

Usually when we travel, we fill our trips with a lot of sightseeing and activities. I love taking pictures, seeking out authentic ethnic experiences, and interacting with the locals. But, you know what? For our honeymoon, I wanted a break from that M.O.

I love shoestring-budget backpack traveling and train-hopping but it gets so, so, exhausting. And it can be very, very stressful.

Following our wedding, which I imagine will be exciting, socially overwhelming, and somewhat nerve-wracking, all that I want to do is relax. I don’t want to talk to anyone, I don’t want to schlep things from one location to another. I don’t want to focus on anything but myself, my new husband, and a quiet, gentle breeze.

So we decided to go somewhere warm, where we could relax… a place where neither of us have been before… a place that’s not too far from home…

Holy Crap!

I’m so excited that I can’t sit still. We just booked our honeymoon! Over the last week we’ve gone from “well, I dunno,” to “we have to have one, but where?” to “this, this is it.” And today we reserved rooms and tickets. I can’t wait to tell you all about it. I can’t wait to BE there!

We’ll get there fast & then we’ll take it slow

You know, it’s funny… a lot of people have asked us where we’re going for our honeymoon. At 11 months out, we really haven’t decided yet. I don’t even know if we’ll have one because we’ll both have to take time off for travel to Montana before the wedding. At that point in the game, we may well not be able to afford one! But we were asked that question again yesterday and it got me thinking about where we would go if money were no object. Here are a few my daydreams:

  • The Seychelles
  • Grecian Islands
  • The south of France
  • Thailand
  • Ireland
  • The US Virgin Islands
  • Hawaii
  • Maldives
  • Africa

I’m sure there are a billion more places (many of them remote and tropical) I’d love to honeymoon. That’s just the top-of-mind list. What do you think?
