It’s All in the Details (Part 2 of 2)

21

Well, folks, this is it… the last photo recap of our wedding. Next, I’ll share with you our budget breakdown, and then it’s on to our Zihuatanejo honeymoon. After that, who knows!

My first detail recap showed you the people and accessories that gave celebration special warmth and feeling.

Today’s post focuses on some of the details that made our wedding unique: DIY projects, decorations, food and beverage, transportation, et cetera. I’ve picked lots of colorful photos to share each detail with you and, wherever possible, linked you to my past posts with more information or other external resources. Enjoy!

It’s All in the Details (Part 1 of 2)

Today I’m delighted to share with you the first of two detail-oriented recap posts. These are sort of like recaps of the recap – focused on all the outfits, accessories, DIY projects, decorations, and edible/drinkable pieces of our wedding. Many of you have asked me questions about specific things that we wore, made, or did. Well, these detail posts are the best place to look for all that information, and to see new photos of all the little things that made our wedding day special.

Check it out!

Married in Montana: Bouquet & Garter Toss

0

In my last post, I introduced you to our bluegrass band, Good Wood. In my next post, I’ll let you hear some of their music and detail the craziness at the end of the evening. But now, as the band is taking a break between sets, it’s time for us to take the stage for the garter and bouquet toss!

I’ve always been a big fan of bouquet tosses. As a single girl, I loved the symbolism of “passing the torch.” I’ve caught my fair share of flowers over the last few years– and it’s always been a source of great entertainment and pride. Plus, free pretty flowers are a nice souvenir!

The garter toss, however, gives me mixed feelings. I’ve always found the symbolic “deflowering” to be somewhat tasteless, and not particularly relevant (myself having been deflowered a long while ago). Also, while it seems that everyone enjoys watching the groom fish around in the bride’s dress for her undergarments (ack!), my observation has been that male audience participation in the garter toss is always less enthusiastic than female participation in the bouquet.

But whatever, Justin seemed eager to toss a garter, and I’m an equal opportunity bride, so I decided to oblige, and we had both…

Married in Montana: The Little Things

What better way to finish my guest-photo posts than with some photographs of details from the day!

First, to set the mood, a shot of the Polebridge Mercantile, home of the Polebridge bakery (responsible for our cake and tartlets). This sight greets guests as they drive into Polebridge. You can see our tent in the field behind…

Our ceremony site was also set back and to the left of the mercantile, along the banks of a small creek and overlooking the peaks in the Northwest corner of Glacier National Park (hidden by clouds in the photo below)…

Hookin’ up my jars

I spent some time this weekend with my shepherd’s hooks and cache of jars working out how to attach one to the other.

First, I picked out 20 jars of a similar smallish size, and set them aside. Then, I went a-crafting. Down to Michael’s to pick up some wraphia (aka raffia), a natural-looking, grassy ribbon that’s strong enough to use as a hanger.

But my mock-ups wouldn’t be complete without some stand-in dahlias… so I got five of these lovelies at a local florist:

Flowers in Fall Colors

After visiting the rental company outside Whitefish, mom, Katalin, and I headed back to Columbia Falls to meet with Glacier Wallflower and plan my wedding florals.

Our meeting with the florist had me a little nervous. I have to admit that while I like flowers, I don’t know very much about them, or necessarily how to communicate what I want.

I tend to buy the cheapest, brightest bouquets at local farmers markets and avoid florist’s shops because they’re often stuffy and filled with scary trinkets like this…

(a hooker giraffe??) when the actual flowers are, more often than not, hidden in a refrigerator somewhere.

Shepherd’s Hooks – Not Just for Herding Anymore

I looooove Shepherd’s hooks. Though I have to admit they were one of the (many) things I’d never heard of before I started reading wedding blogs, I’ve been quite taken with the way they look.

Shepherd’s hooks are a fabulous way to decorate your aisle or altar for an outdoor wedding, especially if you are using non-traditional seating like benches or hay bales, both of which we are considering for our wedding.

The home and garden store near my work started stocking beautiful dark-brown (gunmetal? pewter?) colored hooks for only $3.95 apiece, which my research online told me was a very competitive price. I decided to get 20 hooks, which is probably more than I need, but I was able to talk them into a 15% bulk discount on my purchase. Plus, buying the hooks in person meant avoiding heavy-duty shipping charges on several pounds of metal!

Here they are, chillin’ in my garage:

Glass Collection

Here are a few more snapshots of the antique/rustic glass I’ve been collecting for our reception. These jars will be used for flowers and candles:

Bouquets I Like

I’m just popping by to post this collage of bridal bouquets I like:

Some of them are the right color, some are the right shape, and some have really fun textures from berries, grasses, and leaves. My favorites are the three in the center and the one on the lower right.

I’m looking for bouquets that are burgundy with orange, yellow, and green accents. I want mine to be mid-sized with a compact but dynamic shape (not super-round like a pomander and not super spiky either).

As for components? I’m pretty much cutting roses out of the equation. They’re overpriced and overdone. I’m also axing carnations and peonies because I just don’t like them for some reason. I my bouquet to be made up of different flowers that evoke a more wild, natural look. I’m considering dahlias, gerbera daisies, hypericum berries, wheat, dry grasses, seed pods, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, yellow asters, calendula, zinnias, flax, bear grass, montbretia, etc.

Any suggestions for ingredients? Seen any bouquets that fit the bill?

Flower Inspirations

I’ve been collecting photos of wedding flowers that are somewhat close to what I have in mind for our decorations. Sometimes I’ll like a particular style of arrangement, but not the flowers in it. Sometimes I like the flowers, but not the arrangement. Here are two collections of flower inspirations, all from two weddings I felt were particularly close to my own vision:

I love the gerbera daisies, the clear vases, the old cans, and the burlap table runners in this first set. I’m not a fan of the color scheme– it’s far too soft and springy for our wedding. But the awesome part about gerbera daisies is that they come in SO MANY colors, including lovely bright gold and red and burgundy.

There’s so much to love in this set of photos that I don’t even know where to start. First of all, I absolutely adore the men’s boutonnières. The wildness of the arrangements and the high-contrast bright colors are very close to what I’d like to have. I’d remove the blues, since I think they’d detract from our color scheme, but I’d keep the rest. The sunflower garland is cute, if a bit over the top.

My favorite part, by far, in this set of photos is the copper pew cones on shepherd’s hooks. Absolutely wonderful! I’m going to have to borrow that idea. I also adore the hanging arrangements and buckets of flowers on the steps and tables (though again, I’m not partial to the pale green).

What do you think?
